Concept

Co-founded by Daniel Werner & Volker Eschmann in 2010, In Touch integrates the somatic disciplines of Contact Improvisation, Watercontact & Aquatic Motion, Developmental and Somatic Movement and Fascia in Bodywork/ Movement. We are systematically researching these dance and movement arts through various projects, in collaboration with highly qualified, internationally respected teachers and artists in Asia and Europe. 

In Touch Journey opens an experimental space for learning, play and exploration, held in a safe container. We often work in natural surroundings to invite the elements into our practice. We work with CI as the core discipline, as it is one of the most powerful tools for embodiment we know. An important aim is to bring the qualities of embodiment and nature to cities and into academic educatioal frames.

Contact Improvisation is a contemporary dance form. The most specific characteristic of this form is moving with shared weight. It is based on physical sensation, deep listening, and communication~ Bodies in creative dialogue.

In CI you dance in close physical contact with people you might be meeting for the first time. This form is intimate in it's nature, works with trust and has a profound capacity to heal and activate. We feel in the CI community that with with clear, respectful intentions, what happens on the dance floor, is dancing. Although sensuality may inspire and nourish the experience, the focus is on the dance. It is crucial when we do consciously invite sensuality into a dance, that one remains rooted in the presence and awareness, while perceiving physical sensation and acknowledging emotions. This allows us to "surf the waves" of hormones and emotions with maturity.

We enjoy the technical, skill based approach in CI, as this provides us with more options and choices in our dance.

An important key to contact improvisation lies in the developmental process of movement. We can access, and re-pattern our unconscious movement habits from early childhood..IC ONE

In many contexts where CI is practiced, such as jams, workshops, festivals, etc, the dancers and teachers often follow, consciously or intuitively, the ontology of human movement development. This is especially true in the warm up.

Warm ups often start on the floor with yielding our weight, releasing our head into the earth's support and letting go all unnecessary tension. This achieves inner spaciousness and brings attention to the center of the body. A strong center and soft limbs create 'navel radiation patterns' ~Like a star fish.

From there the warm up follows the natural, organic logic of gradually exploring higher levels in space, just as in developmental movement.TURE TWO

Playground and Jam

As CI developed, a wonderful experiential field emerged~ the "Contact Jam". This is a place where our body/mind/spirit, meet dance, touch and connectivity~ A playground to practice, explore and celebrate! Improvisation is about having options and being creative with our choices.

Emotional Awareness and Somatic Practice 

The intention of an emotional awareness practice is opening and expanding our consciousness to experience life more fully. The core of our approach to emotional awareness lies in somatic practices, focusing on deepening our sensitivity and perception of our inner and outer environments. We work with the underlying movement principles of human development. This automatically creates access to the subconscious mind, which can awaken dormant emotions, body memory, or past traumas. Developing emotional intelligence means working through the many layers of our humanity. Movement with embodied awareness is a simple but effective way of releasing physical and emotional stress, buried deep within.

Early stages of human development, completely depend on touch and movement: Mouthing, hand/ eye co-ordination and reach, push and pull patterns~ (Body Mind Centering)

If we were not given the appropriate attention and nourishment in our development, or had external stressors, the body/mind may not have integrated certain movement structures and principles. This creates huge gaps in our growth. As adults we can end up compensating for those unmet childhood needs, with unconscious, unhealthy patterns in our sexuality. The nervous system takes over, dominates, creating the tendency for strong neural experiences that do not integrate touch and movement. When touch, movement, and proprioception (perceived stimuli relating to the position/movement of the body) have been developed and nurtured, the healthy desire to express tactility, sensuality and sexuality can arise naturally.C  THREE

"The reason that a human remains complete is because he got carried in his childhood." Jean Ligoff.  We need the feeling of being carried and the yielding and compression of our weight creates this feeling. Bodywork, movement and Contact Improvisation dance provide this opportunity. Through somatic practices we give time and space to our body to develop more sensitivity. Our senses nourish the internal organs, and the largest organ, the skin, is how we directly relate to the outer world. Our nervous system is a two way street of communication. 

Our work is based on consistent, proven experience. We are intrinsically connected and expressing this connection is our human nature.
